NXIVM leader Nancy Salzman has been released early from a Pennsylvania halfway house. Salzman pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy related to the cult. She was originally sentenced to three and a half years behind bars, and served fewer than two years. WNYT reports Salzman was supposed to be released this month, but was set free in mid-March.
Saratoga County Man Charged In Knife Attack
A Saratoga County man is accused of injuring a person with a knife. WNYT reports 25 year old Alejandro Garcia of Halfmoon allegedly assaulted the victim at a home on Eastwood Drive around 12:20 a.m. on March 30. The victim, who Garcia knew, was treated at the scene by Clifton Park-Halfmoon EMS and then decided to go to the hospital.
Garcia was charged with second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

Ballston Spa Residents Could See Tax Hike
Ballston Spa residents’ property taxes could increase either over 2% or 3%, depending on which town their property falls in, along with water and sewer rates increases. According to the Daily Gazette, the changes are part of Mayor Frank Rossi’s proposed budget — the topic of a public hearing April 8 — as the village tries to plan several future projects and expenses.
Summer Parking Plan For Saratoga
Parking in the Spa City from Labor Day to Memorial Day will now come with a charge. WTEN reports the newest pay to park plans would include six locations throughout the city at a rate of two dollars an hour. Spa City residents and those who live in the Saratoga Springs Central School District will be allowed to park for free with a permit. Street parking would remain free for everyone.
Moreau Adopts Industrial Development Moratorium
The Moreau Town Board on Monday approved a 9-month moratorium on any new industrial development. WNYT reports the new law would prohibit the issuing of any permits allowing industrial uses and operations in the town’s manufacturing and industrial zones until the board can update its comprehensive plan to determine the types of uses that should be allowed, and bans any permits that would allow the disposal or processing of any waste that does not originate in the town.
Moreau Town Board Passes Commercial Development Moratorium
The Moreau Town Board passed a proposed moratorium Monday on commercial development. Local Law 3 passed unanimously. According to WTEN, the law postpones permits for industrial operations within the town’s manufacturing or industrial zones. It includes the disposal of waste materials not from Moreau or starting any businesses that conduct that kind of work.
Birdhouse Building Event Suspended In Ballston Spa
The future of a birdhouse building project in Ballston Spa is uncertain. Mayor Frank Rossi tells WNYT they are working to develop a program to replace the Birdhouse Festival. The program is suspended this year as there is conflict over who is in charge of the program and discrepancies in funding for the project.
Saratoga Firefighters Battle Brush Fire Along Northway
Saratoga Springs firefighters responded to a large brush fire on the Northway on Sunday afternoon. WNYT reports gusty winds helped spread the fire through the dry vegetation. There are no fire hydrants on the Northway, so the department relied on a 3,000-gallon tanker truck from the Malta Ridge Volunteer Fire Company.
Shen Cited For Inaccurate Staff Payments
A Saratoga County school district was cited by the state for inaccurate payments to staff in audits released Friday. According to WNYT, the Shenendehowa Central School District did not accurately calculate longevity payments for 26 of the 32 employees that the New York State Comptroller’s Office reviewed during an audit for the period of July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. The error resulted in 26 employees being underpaid by a total of about $9,200.
