Schools Budget Approved In Saratoga

Voters approved of a $142,718,530 budget for Saratoga Springs City School District for the 2023-24 school year. According to WRGB, Voters approved of the district spending an estimated $1.5 million on the purchase of six 66-passenger buses, four 30-passenger buses and one 25-passenger bus with a wheelchair lift. The proposition was approved in a vote of 3971 to 1009.
Three candidates were elected to the Board of Education. Beth Fogarty Braxton received 3679 votes, Tony Krackeler received 3581 votes, Anjeanette Emeka received 3412 votes.

School Budget Passes In Waterford Halfmoon

Waterford-Halfmoon Union Free School District voters approved a $23.4 million budget for the 2023-2024 school year. The Daily Gazette reports the budget passed by a vote of 107 in-favor to 34 opposed. Voters also approved a budget proposition to establish a bus reserve fund by a vote of 102 to 36. John Catanzarita, David Lee and Jamie Maloney were elected to the three open Board of Education seats.

Saratoga Considers New Punishment For People Carrying Firearms While Intoxicated

Saratoga Springs city leaders are working to potentially add a new punishment for people carrying firearms while intoxicated.
WRGB reports while a vote was not on the May 16th agenda, the proposal was the focus of discussions during Tuesday’s city council meeting. The proposed ordinance would ban anyone from carrying a firearm in a public place while under the influence of alcohol or drugs–regardless of whether they have a license to carry.

AIM Services Opens New Day Program

AIM Services – which provides residential and community-based services and care for people with disabilities and traumatic brain injuries in Saratoga County – has a new program. WNYT reports It’s called STRIVE, a day program run through AIM. STRIVE is designed to provide an environment where people can learn skills that will help them live their most independent lives.

Man Charged In Stabbing Incident In Corinth

A man was arrested in Saratoga County in an alleged stabbing. WNYT reports it happened at a Cumberland Farms in Corinth last Friday night. Zachary Tremblay cut another man’s neck during a physical altercation. The victim is expected to recover.
Tremblay was arrested Sunday, and charged with assault in the second-degree.

Saratoga Man Arrested For Trying To Hit Individual With Pick Axe

State Police arrested 65 year old William P. Grewen, 65, of Saratoga, NY, for Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Menacing and Harassment after he allegedly struck a person with a pick axe during a dispute. The investigation determined that Grewen reportedly approached the victim and began swinging a pickaxe multiple times in an attempt to strike the victim during a verbal dispute. Both parties were separated with no one involved being struck with the pickaxe. Grewen then left the area before law enforcement’s arrival.

Wednesday Meeting Between Saratoga Bars, Police, Fire Departments

The Saratoga Springs Ad Hoc Downtown Advisory Committee will host a workshop on Wednesday, May 17 for all eating and drinking establishments in the City. The workshop will feature presentations by the City’s police and fire departments with the goal of establishing clear expectations for how such establishments can comply with all state and local laws and improve communications and collaboration between the public safety officials on patrol and the owners and security personnel at work in these establishments

One Dead After Shooting At Albany Barbershop

A 47-year-old man died Saturday afternoon in a shooting on Second Avenue in Albany. Albany police said he was one of three people shot at a barbershop in South Albany. He was taken to Albany Medical Center where he died, WNYT reports Police said they are not releasing the man’s name until family is notified. The other victims were 19 and 9.

Fire In South Glens Falls Sunday

Flames consumed a building at 22 Main Street in South Glens Falls. WNYT reports the fire broke out around 4:30 Sunday morning. The building was once a McDonald’s and later a Chinese restaurant, and the fire spread to a nearby laundromat and chocolate store. No one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Stefanik Gets Behind Employer Child Care Measure

Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is among those reintroducing legislation making it easier for employers to provide childcare and dependent-care assistance to their workers. Supporters say the act would reduce the cost and regulatory burden for employers seeking to offer child or dependent care assistance, align the treatment of these pro-family benefits with other employer-provided benefits and expand access to care for working families without mandates or new federal spending.
