A contractor wanted by Mechanicville Police turned himself in on Saturday. WRGB reports it comes amid claims that Dakota Smith, of DAS Builders, LLC, is stealing thousands of dollars and materials from his clients. Smith was facing charges in Mechanicville after the city’s building inspector says Smith faked insurance documents when applying for a building permit.
Public Hearing Set On Wilton Mall Plans
A public hearing is set for October 5th in Wilton regarding plans by a developer for the Wilton Mall. Representatives appeared before the Wilton Town Board recently and issued two requests to the board — that they get a public hearing scheduled and that the application be sent to the County Planning board.
Man Drowns In Greater Sacandaga Lake
A man has drowned, attempting to swim to a vessel in Great Sacandaga Lake Sunday afternoon. WRGB reports the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a drowning in the lake near Mountain Stream Lane in the town of Edinburg at 12:35 PM where a 40 year old man was trying to swim to a vessel but went under and never came back up. He was recovered by SCUBA divers but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Delays Around Track For Road Work
Drivers in Saratoga Springs should watch out for lane closures starting this week. WNYT reports one lane in each direction will be closed between East Avenue and Henning Road as work resumes along the Saratoga Racecourse.
That’s about a point-7 mile stretch right in front of the gates of the racecourse.
Ballston Spa Woman Sues Housing Coalition Following Father’s Death
The daughter of a Ballston Spa man, who died last year after being attacked with a baseball bat, has brought a lawsuit against Veterans & Community Housing Coalition Inc., for its alleged role in her father’s death. The Daily Gazette reports Letika LaQuania Nicole Rodgers, the daughter of Bernard Rodgers, has filed a legal complaint with Veterans & Communities Housing Coalition after her father was attacked, and later died from the resulting injuries he received while living in housing provided by the coalition last year.
Monahan Court Appearance In Shooting Death Case
Kevin Monahan, the man accused of killing 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis in April after she and her friends drove up the wrong driveway, appeared in court Thursday. WRGB reports attorneys on both sides went before the judge for what is called a Huntley hearing to decide whether what Monahan said on the night of the shooting to the officers would be used during the trial, which is set for October 30th.
Former NXIVM Leader Released From Federal Lock Up
Former NXIVM sex cult leader Nancy Salzman has been freed from federal prison. The Times Union reports she is no longer an inmate, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Salzman served less than two years. She was originally sentenced for three and half years. She pleaded guilty in 2021 to racketeering conspiracy related to the cult.
Wild Weather Causes Downed Trees, Power Outages
Severe weather moved through parts of the Capital Region on Thursday, knocking down trees, and causing tens of thousands of homes and businesses to lose power. One of those trees came down on a home at 647 Hudson Avenue in Stillwater around 6:15 p.m., reports WNYT, leaving two holes in the roof. No injuries reported.
Saratoga’s Autumn Stroll Series Begins Sunday
The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation (SSPF) is set to kick off its Autumn Stroll Series on Sunday, Sept. 10 with historic walking tours offered every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. through Oct. 29 in various neighborhoods throughout Spa City. The Saratogian reports the tours will highlight the Gut neighborhood, mail-order houses on the east side, the architecture of the Saratoga Spa State Park, the diverse history of the West Side, and more.
SSPD Hosts Public Discussion On Public Safety
Saratoga Springs Police hosted the first of what will be many public discussions on public safety. WTEN reports Police Chief Tyler Mcintosh said the forum is meant to be -quote- “an informal discussion to potentially identify problems in the community that we’re not aware of.” He says once they identify them, those who attend can discuss potential solutions.
