Washington County DA Releases New Info In Gillis Shooting Death

The Washington County District Attorney has filed new information related to the shooting death of Kaylin Gillis of Schuylerville. WNYT reports Tony Jordan spells out in the clearest terms yet why his office believes Kevin Monahan is guilty of the depraved indifference murder of Gillis. This filing is the district attorney’s response to a defense motion to dismiss many of the charges against Monahan.

Clifton Park Considers Pickleball Courts

The Town of Clifton Park is looking at building pickleball courts in Veterans Park. According to the Daily Gazette, the Clifton Park Town Board has received a number of proposals for building potential pickleball courts in the town. The project is expected to cost around $538,000 and would include 10 pickleball courts, a covered pavilion and the installation of conduit for potential future electricity.

Waterford Dragon Boat Races Raise $10K

Dragon Boat races returned to Waterford on Saturday, raising money for people impacted by breast cancer in the Capital Region. $10,000 was raised for To Life!, which is a local non-profit organization which helps improve life for people affected by breast cancer. WRGB reports dozens of boats navigated the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers as a part of the Festival, as the ships raced for awards and spectators lined the Waterford promenade.

SPAC Announces Little Theatre Line Up

Saratoga Performing Arts Center has announced the lineup for the 2023-2024 season at the Spa Little Theater. The intimate 500-seat theater, located at 19 Roosevelt Drive, hosts the residency of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in addition to its year-round programming. City Council Passes Homeless Shelter Buffer Law

Saratoga Springs City Council passed an ordinance that bans homeless shelters from being located near schools. Advocates say it sends the wrong message because it equates homeless people to pedophiles. WTEN reports the law stems from plans to turn a former senior living facility into a permanent shelter across the street from Saratoga Central Catholic School.

Hunting And Trapping Licenses On Sale

DEC announces that hunting and trapping licenses are now on sale, as are deer management permits for this season.
You can buy permits and licenses online, at a DEC agent or by phone. Hunting and trapping licenses will be valid from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2024.

Saratoga Springs Poet Laureate Receives Award

Saratoga Springs poet laureate Joseph Bruchac was named one of 23 people to receive the Academy of American Poets’ Poet Laureate Fellowship 2023 award. The Daily Gazette reports Bruchac was named the city’s poet laureate earlier this year and is tasked with creating, reading and disseminating poetry that defines Saratoga Springs. Bruchac is a writer, musician and traditional storyteller who has authored over 180 books in various genres. He began writing poetry in the second grade.

Saratoga Springs City Council Passes Firearms Ordinance

Saratoga Springs City Council passed an amendment to its firearms ordinance on Tuesday night. Officials say it was necessary because the ordinance has not been updated since the 1970s. WTEN reports the amendment prohibits the possession of firearms while intoxicated in public spaces, and includes penalties for each firearm discharge.

Saratoga Officials Warn Of Fake Uber, Lift Drivers

Saratoga Springs Mayor Ron Kim is warning about a rise in issues with ridesharing, mainly Uber and Lyft. City council sent out a warning Tuesday alerting people to check for the difference between registered, licensed passenger services and unregistered passenger services, reports WNYT, after reports of unlicensed, fake Uber and Lyft drivers picking up passengers from popular locations within the city.
