Campaign Raises $200K For Saratoga County Businesses, Non Profits

More than $200,000 will support Saratoga County businesses and non-profits thanks to Love Our Locals, a campaign from the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. WNYT reports as part of the end of the year program, shoppers and donors were encouraged to submit their receipts of $20.23 or more spent at local businesses to be entered in a gift card giveaway.

Ex-Albany County Sheriff’s Office Employee Cops Plea To Issuing Fake Checks

A former Albany County Sheriff’s Office employee pleaded guilty to stealing $122,251.25 from his former employer. According to WNYT, 61 year old John T. Cox admitted issuing 16 fraudulent checks drawn on funds from the sheriff’s office. This happened between June 2017 and February 2023. Cox used the checks to pay himself directly or to pay down debt he owed. He also tried to cover up the fraud by falsifying records.

Testimony Underway In Monahan Trial

Testimony began Thursday afternoon with the playing of 911 recordings showing the moments after Kaylin Gills was shot and the lengthy interactions the dispatcher had with the man accused of killing her, Kevin Monahan, in their efforts to speak with officers. WNYT reports Monahan, 66, is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Gillis, who was a passenger in an SUV that had mistakenly turned into his driveway.

Saratoga Hospital Implements Mandatory Mask Policy

Saratoga Hospital implemented a mandatory mask policy Wednesday for all visitors and patients as the number of people with respiratory diseases, including COVID-19 and flu, continues to rise statewide. The Daily Gazette reports the hospital is the latest in the region to implement the policy, following in the footsteps of Glens Falls Hospital, which implemented the policy last year.

Alleged Kidnapper Asks To Stay Out Of Court

Accused kidnapper Craig Ross Jr. is asking to stay out of court. WNYT reports Ross appeared via Teams video conferencing from the Saratoga County Jail to ask County Judge Jim Murphy to be allowed to stay at the jail and appear virtually for any future appearances. Ross claims appearing in court increases his anxiety, which exacerbates an illness he has.

Jury Picked For Monahan Trial

A group of 12 jurors and four alternates have been picked in trial of 66 year old Kevin Monahan. WNYT reports Monahan is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 20 year old Kaylin Gillis of Schuylerville, who was a passenger in a vehicle that had mistakenly turned up Monahan’s Hebron driveway. A group of nine men and three women and the main jurors. Three women and one man will serve as alternate jurors.

‘Bet’ Sanders Of Saratoga Passes Away At 107

Elizabeth (Bet) Sanders Smith passed away peacefully on January 7, 2024 at the age of 107 years old. New Exhibition At Skidmore

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College announced a new exhibition that will launch on February 3. WTEN reports the ‘Studio/Archive’ exhibition will feature contemporary art from the Tang collection examining studio portraiture and archives as tools for agency, empathy, and justice.

Monahan Trial Jury Prospects Whittled Down

In the Kevin Monahan trial, over the last two days, an initial pool of 500 people being summoned to Washington County Court has been whittled down to over 100. WNYT reports various people were excused because of information they put on their questionnaire that said they would have difficulty serving on this jury.

Pair Arrested Planned To Distribute Drugs In Saratoga County, Say Police

Two men were planning to sell illegal drugs in Saratoga County, investigators said. According to WNYT, 19 year old
Christopher Terry of Halfmoon and 21 year old Mikhail Green of Albany were arrested Friday. Police say they had large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and hallucinogens along with an illegal “ghost gun” and extended 30-round magazine.
