Report: Ref Attack Suspect Will Turn Himself In Monday

New York State Police say a suspect in last Sunday night’s referee attack at the Impact Athletic Center in Halfmoon will turn himself in to authorities on Monday. WNYT reports a referee was ambushed and attacked by an out of control player. The reason is unknown.

Man Shot By State Police In Ballston Lake Standoff

A standoff Saturday night into Sunday in Ballston Lake ended up with a man being shot by State Police. WNYT reports troopers responded to a Ballston Lake home around 7 p.m. Saturday after a report of a man firing a shotgun in a field close to a home. Just before 7 a.m. Sunday, the 27-year-old man came out of his home with the shotgun, ignoring orders to put the weapon down. That’s when a member of the special response team fired a single shot, hitting the man in the upper body. He’s under guard at the hospital.

Officer Honored For Efforts

Saratoga County District Attorney Karen Heggen presented Sergeant Angela McGovern of the Saratoga Springs Police Department the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office 2021 Public Service Award for her outstanding efforts regarding the Chalmers Davis case from August, 2021. She arrived on the scene and applied a life saving tourniquet to the arm of a stabbing victim.

Deadly Crash Thursday Morning In Wilton

The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly crash in the town of Wilton which happened just before 7:30 a.m. on Thursday at the intersection of Mountain Ledge Drive and Route 9. Police said a 46-year-old man died in the crash. His identity is not being released until family has been notified. The crash remains under investigation.

Troy Councilwoman At Center Of Voter Fraud Resigns

A Troy councilwoman has now resigned after pleading guilty to three federal counts of voter fraud. According to WNYT,
Kimberly Ashe-McPherson, a Republican, admitted to fraudulently casting an absentee ballot in last year’s primary election and two such ballots in the general election. McPherson’s name appeared on both ballots.

Parties Involved In Ref Attack Banned Permanently

Update on a story we told you about this week involving a basketball referree attacked by a player at a 3 on 3 basketball tournament in Halfmooon. WNYT reports the player was on the Saratoga Splash and now everyone involved in the referee assault is permanently banned from basketball tournaments by the sponsoring organization, Zero Gravity, which is owned by 3-Step.

Deadly Motorcycle Crash On The Northway In Malta

State Police are currently investigating a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred on I-87 in the town of Malta. At approximately 7:47 a.m. on June 8, 2022, the New York State Police responded to a fatal crash involving two motorcycles on I-87 north in the town of Malta, between exits 11 and 12. Preliminary investigation determined that 38-year-old Laura B. Covarrubias of Glenmont, was operating a 2021 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound in the middle lane when she moved to the left lane and struck Raymond Suen, 47, of Schenectady. Suen was operating a 2009 BMW motorcycle. Covarrubias then lost control and exited the roadway striking a guiderail. Suen and Covarrubias had been traveling together at the time of the collision.
Covarrubias was transported to Saratoga Hospital where she was declared deceased. Suen was uninjured in the crash.

State Police Warn Of Scam Targeting Elderly

A warning from the New York State Police: beware of scams targeting older people. Callers are claiming to be a family member and may have an illness or may have been arrested. WNYT reports the caller will put urgency on helping them and not to contact other family, or the caller claims to be law enforcement, saying your Social Security number or bank accounts have been “compromised”. They then ask personal information to “verify” the identity.

State Cannabis Control Board Sets Pot Packaging Rules

The state Cannabis Control Board is looking to ensure that pot pacakging wont be appealing to people under 21 when recreational marijuana hits store shelves. Recently, the panel approved draft packaging and marketing regulations that detail the kinds of packaging that would be prohibited. They also set up minimum standards for packaging and labeling and sets out penalties for violations. For instance, the packaging can’t use cartoons or bright neon colors or any references to toys or games that would appeal to the younger set.
