The annual Saratoga County Restaurant Week is returning from March 6 to 14. Dozens of restaurants are offering special menus during the week, and this year’s event includes a gift card sweepstakes. Community Woodworking Workshop Opening In Saratoga
Saratoga Joinery, a non-profit organization located at 69 Caroline Street in Saratoga Springs, will soon be opening. The community woodworking shop is set to open its doors on Tuesday, March 5. WTEN reports
Saratoga Joinery aims to offer a place for woodworkers of all levels to learn, build, and share their passion for woodworking. The 8,500 square foot facility includes machines, tools and workspaces, with lumber, sheet goods and other materials available to buy on-site.
Man Convicted Of Drug Dealing In Saratoga County
On Monday, a jury convicted 43 year old Shahid M. Smit of selling drugs on multiple occasions in Saratoga County. Smith reportedly sold fentanyl three times in Wilton and also sold cocaine and methamphetamine in Wilton and Saratoga Springs. WTEN reports Smith was one of four individuals arrested during police raids in December 2022. He faces over 30 years in prison for the ten charges. Sentencing is scheduled for April 22.
Report Points To Wet Conditions At Track For Horse Deaths
Wet conditions may have contributed to a number of horse injuries at the Saratoga Race Course during last summer’s meet, according to a new report. Fourteen horses died at the track last year. According to WNYT, the report from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority released Monday also found exercise history is a factor, but found no evidence of violations of the group’s rules.
Investigation Into Death Of 13 Year Old In Saratoga County
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its Criminal Investigation Unit and Road Patrol are investigating the death of a 13-year-old male as of February 23. The sheriff’s office reports that it happened in the town of Edinburg. WTEN reports there are no obvious indicators of cause of death and they are waiting for the autopsy results. The child’s identity is being withheld.
Queens Man Charged With Reckless Driving In Saratoga County
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jose A. Guity, 25, of Queens for reckless driving, fleeing a police officer, among other accounts. According to WNYT, the Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle on Interstate 87 in Saratoga Springs on Friday around 4:53 p.m. for an unsafe lane change, when the vehicle fled the scene northbound on the interstate, later taking exit 14.
Guity was cuffed after a foot pursuit.
Caffe Lena To Hold Monthly Showcase
Caffe Lena is announcing a new series called “Lena Go Round,” a monthly showcase of singer-songwriters. The Saratogian reports each month, three accomplished singer-songwriters will take the stage, showcasing their unique talents and original compositions. The ticketed show follows the popular “in the round” format.”
County Expanding Schools Opioid Assistance Program
Saratoga County announced plans this week to expand its sheriff-led school resource officer program to include services to assist students who may be dealing with opioid and substance-use disorders.
Skidmore College To Build New Baseball Field
Skidmore College will have a new baseball field come the 2025 spring season. WTEN reports the school’s board of trustees approved the move from the field’s current location on Denton Road to Daniels Road. The project was helped by contributions from donors who will fund “a bulk” of the $3.4M cost. The school says a remainder will be covered by College Capital Reserves.
Saratoga BLM Responds To AG Report On 2021 Protests
Saratoga Springs Black Lives Matter leaders are praising a report from the attorney general slammed the city of Saratoga Springs for their response to protests in 2021. WNYT reports they explained some of the trauma they say they endured while protesting in 2021, including one member saying they were denied medication and placed in a cell for hours without access to food or water.
