12 Year Old Honored For Water Rescue

A Capital Region toddler is alive today thanks for his 12-year-old cousin who saved him from drowning in a swimming pool.
WRGB reports Amelia Juracka from Greenfield Center was at a family gathering last summer when she noticed her 2-year-old cousin’s toy fall in the pool and the boy followed. Amelia sprang into action, rescuing the toddler from the water.

Stewart’s Offering ‘Give A Pint, Get A Pint’

Stewart’s Shops is treating American Red Cross blood donors to free pints of ice cream as a part of the “Give A Pint, Get A Pint” program. WNYT reports during the month of June, donors at blood drives will receive a voucher for a free pint of Stewart’s Shops ice cream or gelato. The program comes during the summer, when blood donations usually slow down.
This is the program’s ninth year.

Galway Man Facing Strangulation Charges

A Galway man is accused of choking a person until they became unconscious. According to WNYT, 40 year old Gerrod M. Jones was charged with strangulation following a disturbance call on Sacandaga Road in the town of Galway just after midnight on Saturday. Jones was arraigned in Galway Town Court and released to pretrial services.

Trump Flag Outside Delmar Post Office To Be Removed

There was a third flag added to the flag pole stationed outside the Delmar Post Office Monday morning. Along with the American flag and a POW flag, was a 2024 Donald Trump for President flag. WRGB reports a representative for the Postal Service says that the flag was not placed there by post office employees and “will be removed as soon as possible.”

Saratoga County Concerns Regarding DWI’s

The number of drunken drivers is dropping in Saratoga County, but the sheriff’s office says it is still making too many DWI arrests. According to WNYT, Saratoga ranks 12th out of 62 counties in New York state when it comes to drunken driving incidents, according to the Times Union. There were 650 reported DWIs in Saratoga County in 2022, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice. That’s down from a peak of 948 in 2017.

DEC Urges Drivers To Give Turtles A Break

DEC is reminding New Yorkers that turtles are nesting in May and June and encourages motorists to ‘give turtles a brake.’ In New York, thousands of turtles are killed each year by unsuspecting drivers when turtles cross roads to find nesting areas.
Drivers who see a turtle on the road are encouraged to slow down to avoid hitting it with their vehicle. If the vehicle can safely stop and drivers are able to safely do so, motorists should consider moving the turtle to the shoulder on the side of the road in the direction it was facing.

Saratoga Residents Look To Limit Truck Traffic

For decades residents on Church and Van Dam Streets have been raising concerns about the large trucks traversing their historically designated neighborhood. The Daily Gazette reports a recent effort by the city to limit trucks was shot down by the state and now the Van Dam and Church Neighborhood Association has hired a law firm, exploring legal action if nothing is done and contemplating forgoing the preservation process on their historic homes.

Rabies Vaccination Clinic In Saratoga County

The Saratoga County Animal Shelter will host a rabies vaccination clinic on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the 4-H Training Center in Ballston Spa. It will be free to vaccinate cats, ferrets, and dogs during designated times for each animal.

NYRA Lays Out Belmont Stakes Rules

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) announced several fan-related policies for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival which will be held at Saratoga Race Course from Thursday, June 6 through Sunday, June 9. WTEN reports
According to NYRA, on Thursday, June 6, and Sunday, June 9, admission gates open to the public at 11 a.m. before post time at 12:50 p.m. On Friday, June 7, admission gates open to the public at 10:30 a.m. prior to 12:20 p.m. post time. No re-entry will be allowed during the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.
