The race for the city’s commissioner of public works remained undecided Tuesday night, with election officials left to examine write-in votes cast in a race that will decide the balance of power in city government. Ballots with a write-in choice outnumbered the votes cast for Republican Charles Marshall. Democrat Hank Kuczynski’s name was not on Tuesday’s ballot, but he waged a campaign to elect him with write-in votes.

Mom & Pop’s Café & Catering, located next to Curtis Lumber at 885 Route 67 in Ballston Spa, has been up for sale for several months now. Owners Michael and Donna Venturiello are looking toward retirement. Only the Mom and Pop’s business is for sale, not the building. The property is owned by Curtis Lumber, said Venturiello. The business and equipment are listed for $260,000.

Belmont Stakes Day tickets increase price

If you plan on buying a general admission ticket to this year’s Belmont Stakes Day, prepare to pay up. Ticket prices have increased by 50%, according to a news release from the New York Racing Association. In 2024, general admission to Belmont Stakes Day was $50. This year, it’s $75. Despite that increase, general admission prices have held steady for the remaining days of the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival.

New York State has awarded Glens Falls a $1.09 million grant for vacant rental properties. The grant, awarded through New York’s Vacant Rental Program, supports repairs and rehabilitation of vacant spaces into apartments for low-to medium-income renters in Glens Falls, Queensbury and Lake George

The Lake George Winter Carnival’s traditional activities and attractions will most likely be back each weekend atop the lake as they were annually decades ago. Additionally, the winter carnival will be held for five weekends instead of four. This Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. the annual Outhouse Races return.

Shen AI Use In Classrooms

Shenendehowa Central School District is using artificial intelligence in its classrooms to help with tasks such as report card comments and instructional opportunities that can bring historical characters to life. The Daily Gazette reports Magic School is currently used in more than 10,000 schools and districts worldwide, according to its website. Shenendehowa purchased the software for $30,000 for the 2024-25 school year.

New Deputies Sworn In In Saratoga County

Saratoga County swore in 12 new deputies on Thursday. Sheriff Michael Zurlo presided over the ceremony at the department’s headquarters in Ballston Spa. WTEN reports the new deputies will now head to Schenectady for training for the next six months.
