29-year-old Nicholas J. Normile of Fort Ann, has been charged with criminally negligent homicide following a fatal crash. He is accused of stealing a motor vehicle from a relative and subsequently colliding with another vehicle on Tripoli Road in the Town of Fort Ann. The other driver, 75-year-old Merrilee Howard of Fort Ann, later died from her injuries.
Queensbury Man Allegedly Borrowed Car, Sold It To Scrap Yard
A Queensbury man is accused of borrowing a person’s car and then selling to a scrap yard.
State Police said Shane M. Blackmer, 33, took the car from the victim with their permission back in 2022. WNYT reports Blackmer then allegedly sold that vehicle to a scrap yard without the owner’s consent. He stands charged with grand larceny.
Prison Time For Malta Contractor On Larceny Charge
A contractor from Malta who failed to perform work throughout three counties has received 2 to 4 years in prison. WNYT reports Dakota Smith appeared in Albany County Court on Thursday for sentencing on a grand larceny charge. Smith took more than $39,000 from an older couple in Rensselaerville to renovate their house and did not start any of the work.
Current Saratoga DPW Commissioner Mounts Write In Campaign
The current commissioner of public works in Saratoga Springs launched his candidacy Wednesday to win the job permanently. According to WNYT, Hank Kuczynksi is running a write-in campaign for the position, as he will not be on the ballot. The other candidate is Republican Chuck Marshall. Early voting starts on Saturday. The special election is on Jan. 28.
Connecticut Man Sentenced In Wilton Home Invasion
A Connecticut man was sentenced on Tuesday to 14 years in prison for entering a Wilton home and assaulting the resident with a knife. WNYT reports 31 year old Thomas A. Rivera of Naugatuck, had pleaded guilty in Saratoga County Court in August to charges of burglary and criminal contempt. He was arrested on Feb. 8, 2024, after police said he entered the home and struck the person.
Transportation Safety Addressed In Saratoga
Transportation safety took center stage in Saratoga Springs as the city, in partnership with the Capital Region Transportation Council, sought community feedback on improving road safety. WTEN reports input will help shape the council’s Vision Zero Safety Action Plan, which aims to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.
Search On For Arson Suspect
Authorities are searching for the suspect of an arson incident in Whitehall. An arrest warrant has been issued for Garrett Bard, 30, of Whitehall, on felony charges. WTEN reports Bard is accused of intentionally causing a fire at a home on Mountain Street in Whitehall that destroyed the house and extensively damaged a neighboring property. The fire took place around 1:50 p.m. on November 10, 2024.
Woman Injured In Glens Falls Apartments Fire
A Glens Falls woman is being sent to a Westchester burn unit after a fire on Wednesday morning. WNYT reports the fire broke out at 158 Bay St. a little after 11 a.m. There are eight apartments in the three-story building, and the fire started in a second-floor unit. The cause is under investigation.
No Changes For School Schedules In Saratoga Coming Next Year
The Saratoga Springs City School District will not be making any changes to school schedules for the 2025-26 school year. The district is considering adjusting school schedules to ease the strain on bus drivers. WTEN reports leaders said the district has about 20 fewer drivers than before the COVID pandemic and can’t keep up with the volume needed for daily routes and extracurricular activities.
No Charges In Deadly Whitehall Fire
No charges will be filed in the Whitehall fire that killed a 10-year-old girl. WNYT reports Aryonna Jabot was killed in a house fire on Maple Street in Whitehall on May 8. Her family members were able to escape the fire.
